Surgery & Pain Management

Balboa Pet Hospital performs an array of orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries. We are partners with local oncologists for any necessary follow-up cancer care. Watch this informative video from the American Veterinary Medical Association to understand more about all anesthetic surgeries and procedures. At Balboa Pet Hospital, we abide by the highest safety standards. This video is an excellent overview of Pet Anesthesia. If you wish to have surgery performed by a Board-Certified Surgeon, we offer this option as well right here in our veterinary hospital. (The link above will take you to the AVMA page on pet care for pet owners. It is also a great client educational resource.)

Monitoring your pet’s cardiovascular system is vital during any anesthetic procedure. For this reason, Balboa Pet Hospital Veterinarians use the best anesthetic administration and cardiovascular monitoring equipment and protocols that are available. Your pet’s anesthesia is tailored to them specifically, which includes consideration of: the type of surgical procedure being performed, any preexisting conditions, blood tests, age, breed, and prior anesthetic experience. We require IV fluids on all surgical patients.

During anesthesia and surgery, your pet is constantly monitored by a trained veterinary technician or assistant. We continually monitor your pet’s oxygen level, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and core body temperature. Of course, recovery is monitored until your pet is awake.

Pain Free & Safety Protocols

We understand the importance of pain management to our patients and to you. The International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management has an excellent page for educating yourself as a pet parent. Relieving pain is important to the recovery of your pet. Keeping their pain under control is an important aspect of our surgery protocols. At discharge, we may also send additional pain management medication home with you and your pet after providing a thorough explanation of its proper use and dosage.

Surgery is not an easy experience for you and your pet. At Balboa Pet Hospital we strive to ensure your pet’s surgery procedure is as comfortable and stress-free as possible. We pride ourselves on our pain management protocols and rigorous safety standards throughout our pet hospital.

Our team of highly trained veterinarians and multiple experienced veterinary technicians and assistants, will provide you with a clear understanding of why a particular procedure is necessary, what the surgery entails, proper post-operative care, and convey any other information you may need to feel comfortable that you are making the right choice for your pet.
