Exotic Pet Veterinarian Care

Avian and exotic pets still need to see the veterinarian, but not all hospitals are able to see them since experience and training in avian and exotic animal medicine can be difficult to come by for veterinarians. Avians and exotic pets can have quite different needs than dogs and cats, but they still need access to a skilled, AAHA accredited veterinarian like the those here at Balboa Pet Hospital in San Francisco.

Exotic pet care.

What is an Exotic Pet?

For most veterinarians, an exotic pet is anything that is not a farm animal or a dog or cat. Here at Balboa Pet Hospital, we consider an exotic pet to be anything that is not a dog, cat. The species we see and treat here at Balboa Pet Hospital are:

  • Rabbits
  • “Pocket” pets
  • Ferrets
  • Reptiles
  • Amphibians
  • Birds
  • Fish
  • Wild animals

Common pets in each of these categories include snakes, iguanas and bearded dragons, frogs and salamanders, parrots, doves, and chickens, koi and goldfish, and mammals such as sugar gliders, squirrels, skunks, or opossums.

Why Exotic Pets Need Vets, Too

Most people are relatively content not to take their exotic animal to the veterinarian. However, what happens if your exotic pet becomes ill? Not knowing what your pet is like when they are healthy leaves the veterinarian at a disadvantage for treating them. If you do not have an exotic animal vet already, it may also be difficult to find someone to see your pet if they do fall ill or injure themselves.

It is also fairly common for well-meaning owners to receive the wrong information about how to care for their exotic pet or bird. Our veterinarians can help provide up-to-date, scientific knowledge about the best methods of care for your pet. They can also tell you what to look out for because illness in an exotic animal oftentimes will not look like illness in a dog or cat.

Common Problems with Exotic Pets

Some of the more common issues to crop up in multiple species of exotic animals are:

  • Improper diet leading to malnutrition, starvation, or obesity
  • Improper housing leading to hypothermia, behavior problems, and suppressed immune systems
  • Viral diseases
  • Bacterial infections
  • Parasites
  • Fungal infections
  • Trauma from falls, fights, or improper housing

If you have an exotic pet that seems like he/she is just not the same as usual, bring him/her to us right away. Many times, the symptoms of disease in these animals are subtle and more difficult to see than in dogs and cats. You are the person who knows what is normal for your exotic pet, so your assessment of the situation is critical to ensuring that your pet receives proper veterinary care.

We know and respect that people care deeply about their pets no matter what species they are. Balboa Pet Hospital prides ourselves on offering AAHA accredited care for most avian and exotic animal species. Contact us today at 1-415-752-3300 to make an appointment for your pet.

I love Balboa Pet Hospital! Balboa Pet Hospital's staff is amazing! The staff is knowledgeable, caring and above all honest! I feel confident that my pets are getting the best possible care there. The staff has always taken time to answer all of my questions and if I think of something after my appointment, I can just email! I know I won’t have to wait too long for response.

Unfortunately, this year I’ve had to make some really difficult decisions. The compassion the staff showed to both my pet and I made these unbearable times tolerable. I am indebted to both Dr. Del Rosso and (the wonderful) Dr. Ravn for their kindness, compassion and dedication.

If you are new to the area or just looking for a new vet, please give Balboa pet Hospital a call!

LOVE everything about this place!!! The people are all super nice & caring. I never feel like they’re trying to sell me stuff I don’t need. The vets (especially Dr. Alice Chan) are wonderful, I always fee; comfortable coming here whenever Walle has an issue. They even help me file the insurance claims after each visit! Would highly recommended any pet owners to see them for their fur-baby needs.

My dog has been a regular patient since 7 years ago. Once in a while we visit other hospitals due to time conflicts. However, we always go back to Balboa Pet Hospital. My dog has bad allergy and the doctors and assistants always follow up with us after the treatments or visits, help us submit the insurance claims. It’s not a cheapest place to go but their patience and caring are irreplaceable.

I’m glad to have found Balboa Pet Hospital near my home. It’s definitely a hidden gem! Dr. Chan saw my dog, Oreo, for her skin problem last week, and my three cats, Pepper, Tofu and Cola, today for annual check-up. She’s very patient (especially with Oreo who’s shy to strangers), knowledgeable and approachable. The front staffs are also very friendly and helpful. They are so prompt to reply my email (within a few hours when I checked back my mailbox). All my pets are about 1-year-old and I’ll definitely bring them here for their health issues/checkup in many years followed.

Brought my dog here for a checkup and some minor concerns. Dr. Chan was very professional. She got my dog the treatment he needed and answered all my questions regarding my concerns. The rest of the staff were very friendly and gentle with my dog. You could tell that the staff are genuine animal lovers; definitely something you want when you entrust the health of your pet to someone.
