Pet Acupuncture

Clinical western Veterinary medicine is ideal for a wide variety of pet ailments, such as broken bones, infections, and endocrine diseases.  But when it comes to the long-term care of elderly veterinary patients, and to pets with chronic diseases, western medicine doesn't always have a solution, or sometimes even a treatment.  Sometimes animals can't tolerate certain pharmaceutical medications or suffer intolerable side-effects. And some owners may prefer a more holistic and supportive approach.

Dog getting Pet Acupuncture in San Francisco, CA.

At Balboa Pet Hospital, we can offer Integrative Medicine, which combines the modern Western approach with Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. We are proud to be associated with Dr. Starfinder Stanley, an Integrative Medicine practitioner who studied Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, and Veterinary Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine at the Chi Institute. Dr. Stanley uses eastern treatment modalities in combination with western medicine to speed healing and improve the health of his patients. For patients with arthritis, geriatric weakness, incontinence, paralysis, intervertebral disc disease, cancer, seizures, allergies, and a long list of other chronic health problems, Integrative Medicine can be an ideal solution.

Pet Acupuncture in San Francisco, CA

The goal of acupuncture treatment is to guide your pet's body to heal itself.  Acupuncture has many effects on the body, including encouraging blood circulation, stimulating the nervous and immune systems, and generating the release of pain-relieving anti-inflammatory hormones.

During a typical acupuncture session, hair-thin needles are inserted into the body in special spots, called acupuncture points, which run in pathways called meridians across your pet's body. Stimulating combinations of different points can create different responses in the animal's body. Most conditions will respond best to a series of acupuncture treatments, which are repeated on a weekly, every-other-week, or monthly basis depending on the condition and the patient.

In most cases, animals tolerate the needles remarkably well, and once they have had a few sessions, some animals actually fall asleep because of the calming effects of the treatment.

There are a number of ways that Dr Stanley may choose to stimulate the acupuncture points during a treatment session.

  • Dry Needle Technique - which is the classic acupuncture you may have experienced yourself.  Hair-thin needles are inserted into points and left in for 10-30 minutes.
  • Aqua-acupuncture -which involves giving injections of medications or vitamin B-12 into the acupuncture points for extended stimulation.
  • Electrostimulation - which uses low-level electrical current at various frequencies flowing between acupuncture needles to stimulate the points.

An Alternative Medical Option in San Francisco

Traditional Chinese veterinary medicine isn't a substitute for Western medicine, but rather a great complement to the practice. Each type of medicine fills in where the other has shortcomings, making our veterinary practice more complete. If your pet is suffering from chronic health problems that Western medicine just isn't resolving, don’t despair, there are more things that we can do to help!  Give our office a call at 1-415-752-3300 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Stanley. As an independent practitioner, Dr. Stanley is only available in our office on certain days, so please call and we will arrange an appointment as soon as possible.

I love Balboa Pet Hospital! Balboa Pet Hospital's staff is amazing! The staff is knowledgeable, caring and above all honest! I feel confident that my pets are getting the best possible care there. The staff has always taken time to answer all of my questions and if I think of something after my appointment, I can just email! I know I won’t have to wait too long for response.

Unfortunately, this year I’ve had to make some really difficult decisions. The compassion the staff showed to both my pet and I made these unbearable times tolerable. I am indebted to both Dr. Del Rosso and (the wonderful) Dr. Ravn for their kindness, compassion and dedication.

If you are new to the area or just looking for a new vet, please give Balboa pet Hospital a call!

LOVE everything about this place!!! The people are all super nice & caring. I never feel like they’re trying to sell me stuff I don’t need. The vets (especially Dr. Alice Chan) are wonderful, I always fee; comfortable coming here whenever Walle has an issue. They even help me file the insurance claims after each visit! Would highly recommended any pet owners to see them for their fur-baby needs.

My dog has been a regular patient since 7 years ago. Once in a while we visit other hospitals due to time conflicts. However, we always go back to Balboa Pet Hospital. My dog has bad allergy and the doctors and assistants always follow up with us after the treatments or visits, help us submit the insurance claims. It’s not a cheapest place to go but their patience and caring are irreplaceable.

I’m glad to have found Balboa Pet Hospital near my home. It’s definitely a hidden gem! Dr. Chan saw my dog, Oreo, for her skin problem last week, and my three cats, Pepper, Tofu and Cola, today for annual check-up. She’s very patient (especially with Oreo who’s shy to strangers), knowledgeable and approachable. The front staffs are also very friendly and helpful. They are so prompt to reply my email (within a few hours when I checked back my mailbox). All my pets are about 1-year-old and I’ll definitely bring them here for their health issues/checkup in many years followed.

Brought my dog here for a checkup and some minor concerns. Dr. Chan was very professional. She got my dog the treatment he needed and answered all my questions regarding my concerns. The rest of the staff were very friendly and gentle with my dog. You could tell that the staff are genuine animal lovers; definitely something you want when you entrust the health of your pet to someone.

The staff is so kind and helpful but most importantly the vets there are super nice. Big shout out especially to Dr. Ravn, one of the most compassionate persons I've ever met. I was distraught recently because my elderly kitty was really sick, Dr. Ravn squeezed me into her busy schedule, hugged me and took care of my kitty right away. I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. She's always so patient and spends time to explain what her thoughts are and works with you on a plan of action. She always personally follows up and give me additional insights and recommendations. I rarely met a vet so dedicated to both patients and their owners.
